Your document never leaves your browser

People split PDFs to pull one payslip out of a year’s worth, or a single page from a contract. Those are exactly the files that should not be sitting on a stranger’s server. Here the splitting happens on your own device and nothing is uploaded, so there is no copy to retain.

Extracting versus splitting

People mean two different things by "split a PDF", so this tool does both.

Extract produces one new document containing the pages you chose. Because the order you write is preserved, it doubles as a reordering tool: entering3,1,2 gives a document with those pages in that sequence. Tickingremove inverts the selection, keeping everything else.

Split into files breaks the document into several PDFs of a fixed length — one page each, or every few pages. A ten-page document split by three gives four files, the last holding the single remaining page.

Why the pieces can add up to more than the whole

A PDF stores shared resources once and references them from every page that needs them — most obviously embedded fonts, which can run to hundreds of kilobytes. When a document is split, each output file needs its own copy of whatever its pages reference.

So ten single-page PDFs can easily total more than the ten-page original. Nothing has gone wrong; the sharing has simply been undone. Splitting into larger chunks keeps more of that sharing intact.

Pages themselves are copied rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution. Need to put documents back together instead? Use the PDF merger.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read into your browser, split on your own device, and each download comes from memory. Nothing is transmitted, so there is no server copy to be retained. You can disconnect from the internet once this page has loaded and it still works, which is a simple way to check the claim for yourself.

How do I write the page selection?

Use page numbers and ranges separated by commas, such as 1-3, 7, 10-12. Order is preserved exactly as you write it, so 5,1,3 really does put page 5 first — useful for reordering as well as extracting. A reversed range like 10-1 reverses those pages.

What is the difference between the two modes?

Extract produces a single new PDF containing the pages you chose. Split into files breaks the document into several PDFs of a fixed size — one page each, or every few pages. Use extract when you want a subset, split when you want the document broken up.

Can I remove pages instead of keeping them?

Yes. Switch the extract mode to remove, and the pages you list are the ones taken out rather than kept. It refuses to remove every page, since that would leave nothing.

Will splitting reduce quality or make the files huge?

Quality is untouched, because pages are copied rather than re-rendered. Text stays selectable and images keep their resolution. File sizes may look surprising though: resources such as embedded fonts can be duplicated into each output file, so ten single-page PDFs can total more than the original.

Why are there no zip downloads?

Because a zip would mean another library and another thing to break for a small convenience gain. Each file gets its own download link instead. If you are splitting a very long document into single pages, consider splitting into larger chunks rather than downloading a hundred files by hand.
