Your document never leaves your browser

Sideways PDFs are usually scans — contracts, certificates, bank letters. The rotation happens on your own device and nothing is uploaded, so there is no copy of your document on anyone’s server.

Why rotation usually does not stick

Nearly every PDF viewer has a rotate button, and in most of them it only turns the page on screen. Close the file and it opens sideways again. Send it to a colleague and they see it sideways. Print it and it comes out sideways.

That is because the rotation was applied to the view, not to the document. A PDF page carries its own rotation attribute, and changing that is what makes the correction permanent and portable.

page.rotation = (current + turn) mod 360

Rotations accumulate rather than replace, and are normalised back into the range 0 to 270. Four quarter turns return a page to exactly where it started rather than recording 360 degrees, which some viewers reject.

Nothing is redrawn

Because rotation is an attribute rather than a transformation of the content, no pixels move and nothing is re-compressed. Text stays selectable, images keep their resolution, and the file size barely changes. This is why rotating is safe to do repeatedly, unlike re-encoding an image.

One consequence worth knowing: a page that is 595 by 842 points stays 595 by 842 after a quarter turn — it simply presents as landscape. So a document’s page dimensions alone cannot tell you whether it will look sideways, which is why the page list here shows the orientation as presented rather than the raw numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my PDF go back to sideways after I rotate it?

Because most viewers rotate only the view, not the file. Acrobat Reader, Preview and browser viewers all offer a rotate button that turns the page on screen and then forgets, so the document opens sideways again and prints sideways too. Saving the rotation into the file itself is what this tool does, and it is why the change survives sending the file to someone else.

Which way do the rotations go?

90 degrees turns the page clockwise, 270 turns it anticlockwise, and 180 flips it upside down. If a page is lying on its right side, 270 usually puts it upright; if it is on its left, 90 usually does. The page list shows the resulting orientation, so you can check before saving.

Can I rotate only some pages?

Yes. Choose a selection and list the pages, such as 1-3, 7. Scanned documents often have only a few sideways pages, so the tool also detects which pages currently present as landscape and offers to select just those.

Does rotating reduce quality or change the file size?

No. Rotation is recorded as an attribute of each page rather than by redrawing anything, so nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed. Text stays selectable, images keep their resolution and the file size is essentially unchanged.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read into your browser, rotated on your own device and handed straight back. Nothing is transmitted, so there is no server copy. It keeps working if you disconnect after the page has loaded.
