What this is

FreeToolSmith is a growing collection of free online tools — calculators, converters and generators. Each one does a single job and is designed to give you the answer as quickly as possible.

The whole site came out of a simple frustration: looking up something basic, like the number of days between two dates, and landing on a page that wants an account, hides the answer behind three screens of introduction, or shifts under your thumb as advertisements load.

How the tools work

Every tool runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you enter is sent to a server, which has three practical consequences:

• Your data stays yours. We never receive the figures or files you work with, so there is nothing for us to store, sell or lose in a breach.
• It is fast. Results appear as you type, because there is no round trip to a server waiting to happen.
• It works on a bad connection. Once a page has loaded, the tool keeps working even if the network drops.

How it is funded

Advertising pays for the hosting, and that is the entire business model. There is no premium plan, no usage cap and no feature withheld for paying users. If a tool is here, it works completely, for everyone, at no cost.

We also try to keep advertising out of the way. Ad space is reserved in the layout before anything loads, so the page does not jump around while you are reading, and the result you came for is never pushed below an advertisement.

What gets built next

New tools are added regularly. Priority goes to jobs that existing tools handle badly: tasks with a specific country’s rules, a specific file size target, or a specific awkward combination that the large generalist sites do not bother to support properly.
